Sulla strada di Iqbal
by Catia Proietti

Maya and her mother Irene live, for rent, in a small flat on the outskirts of Rome, in the company of Mollica, a foundling dog. Great allies in life, Irene and Maya avoid canned food, fast food, television and social media, in an intense relationship built by reading the same books and talking about current affairs. But at thirteen Maya no longer wants to be "the only teenager on planet Earth without a mobile phone". Inevitable is the clash between mother and daughter, in a moment of fragility for Irene who has lost her job and sees her choices as a failure. At Maya school she starts a group work on the clothing industry and fast-fashion, a path that will lead her to discover Iqbal Masih. Maya, in secret, starts working in a small abusive tailor's shop with the desire to help her mother and make herself useful. But what she lives will deeply mark her. The events of Maya, in our days, and the events of Iqbal intertwine, until the final act in which only one certainty remains: in any age and in any time the poor always have the same look, but everything can change starting from our choices of consumption. Inspired by the story of Iqbal Masih
